A Special Japanese Pear – Tottori Nijisseiki Pear

This is one of the most popular Japanese pears, harvested primarily in Tottori and neighboring areas in late summer to early fall.

This variety has a 120-year history due to the cultivation techniques developed in Tottori since its introduction in 1904. “Nijisseiki” in the name stands for the 20th century, which was named with the hope that it would be the champion of the new century.

Its skin is a yellow-green like pears in Europe and the United States. On the other hand, the fruit is crisp and crunchy, unlike its Western counterparts. It is extremely juicy and refreshingly sweet, perfect for Japan’s lingering summer heat.

In season, the pears are not only available in local supermarkets, but you can also enjoy pear picking in pear orchards!

I’m absolutely confident that the Tottori 20th Century Pear is the No.1 pear in Japan.
Have a taste when you are in Tottori!
